Four museums on the Lichtentaler Allee, one day, no admission charge

The four museums on the Museum Mile are throwing a colourful festival. Join a guided tour through all four exhibitions - led by the curators and directors of the museums themselves - and enjoy a supporting programme you will find on no other day: live music at the Stadtmuseum (city museum), a wine bar in the LA8 courtyard, a creative workshop at the Kunsthalle and food trucks outside the Museum Frieder Burda.

The four museums of the Museum Mile on the Lichtentaler Allee stage the Grand Museum Festival together: the Museum Frieder Burda, the Staatliche Kunsthalle, the Museum LA8 and the Stadtmuseum. Admission to all four is free on the day, and so are the guided tours. The festival runs under the motto “Vier Museen - ein Fest” (four museums, one festival).

Each museum shows its current exhibition: the Museum Frieder Burda presents Competing with Reality on 60 years of photorealism, the Staatliche Kunsthalle the state exhibition Bloom up! The Language of Flowers, the Museum LA8 VANITAS, and the Stadtmuseum a selection titled “2000 Jahre in 50 Objekten” (2,000 years in 50 objects).

One tour, billed as “Vier Museen - eine Führung” (four museums, one tour), covers all four museums in a single walk. Heike Kronenwett (director of the Stadtmuseum), Dieter Kistner (curator of “Vanitas” at the Museum LA8), Christina Lehnert (chief curator of the Staatliche Kunsthalle) and Daniel Zamani (artistic director of the Museum Frieder Burda) lead it together. It starts at 10:30, 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30, runs for 60 minutes, sets off from the Stadtmuseum and ends at the Museum LA8.

The museums list the rest of the programme in their flyer: free tours of the four exhibitions throughout the day, educational workshops for children and young people, a creative workshop at the Kunsthalle, live music at the Stadtmuseum, and a stamp card that sends children hunting for the answer to one question in each museum.

Food and drink are spread across the museums. The food trucks Schwanenkind and Nordic Streetfood Sköldogs park outside the Museum Frieder Burda, along with an ice cream van from Rizzi. The Freundeskreis Stadtmuseum/Stadtarchiv serves drinks and snacks at the Stadtmuseum, the Museum LA8 opens a wine bar in its courtyard, and both the Café Kunsthalle and the Rive Gauche stay open all day. The tombola at the Museum Frieder Burda raises money for the Gesellschaft der Freunde junger Kunst.

Notes

Tickets for the tour through all four museums are free. They are handed out at the Stadtmuseum only, one hour before each tour begins, and each tour is limited to 30 people. An APE Calessino shuttles participants with limited mobility between the museums. The service is reserved for this tour, no booking is needed, and the meeting point is on the Lichtentaler Allee by the Stadtmuseum.

The day before the festival, on 18 July 2026, the open-air exhibition “kunst findet stadt” with works by Tobias Rehberger opens in the Kurgarten in front of the Kurhaus (spa house). It runs until 6 September 2026, and admission is free.
