Der Kontrabass

Patrick Süskind's monologue about a lonely double bass player in the state orchestra.

Der KontrabassWeinstube im Baldreit

A man alone with his instrument, a beer and his thoughts: in the pavilion of the Baldreit garden, a double bass player from the state orchestra tells of the confinement of his life, of humiliations he drowns in bottled beer, and of the young soprano he loves from afar.

„Der Kontrabass" is Patrick Süskind’s first work for the theatre; he later became famous for his novel „Das Parfum". The play is a monologue: a tutti player in the state orchestra, impoverished in his human relationships, contemplates his instrument and his life and escapes into an imaginary world built around his unrequited love. For this production Hendrik Pape stands alone on stage, directed by T. Höhne. It is a production by Theater NachtWerk as part of the Summer Theatre in the Baldreit Garden.
