Varnhalt

Varnhalt is a district of Baden-Baden. Together with the villages of Neuweier and Steinbach, it forms Baden-Baden’s Rebland (wine-growing region).

The village lies on the western slope of the Yberg southwest of Baden-Baden’s town centre, at an elevation of 191 m above sea level. A large part of the village’s 416-hectare area is planted with vines. The Varnhalt wine-growing area produces mainly Riesling wines. For centuries, viticulture and the wine trade have been among the residents’ main sources of income. The origins of the Nägelsförst winery, for example, date back to 1268,^[1] making it one of the oldest wineries in Germany.

Varnhalt’s various vineyards are connected by a fine-meshed network of paths that invites walks and hikes. In good visibility, the view across the Rhine plain can reach as far as the Vosges in France.

Like Steinbach and Neuweier, Varnhalt lies on both the Ortenau Wine Path (Ortenauer Weinpfad) and the Baden Wine Route (Badische Weinstraße). Like the other Rebland villages, the place has the Yburg as its landmark. Varnhalt has been part of Baden-Baden since 1972.
