Geroldsau

Geroldsau is a district of Baden-Baden south of the town centre, between Lichtental and Malschbach. With the Geroldsauer Wasserfall (Geroldsau Waterfall), a popular Baden-Baden destination is located in this district.

Sights

As early as 1820, the natural monument Geroldsauer Wasserfall developed into a popular destination for Baden-Baden’s visitors. The 9-metre-high waterfall remains very popular today. Since 2015, the Geroldsauer Mühle (Geroldsau mill) has been a new attraction in Geroldsau. Among other things, the mill houses a shop for regional products. There is also the Marienkapelle (Chapel of St Mary) on Heschmattweg. On the slope behind the chapel is a Way of the Cross commemorating those who fell or went missing in the Second World War.

Geroldsau lies on the B500 and at the start of the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (Black Forest High Road). Other sights in the Black Forest, such as the national park and the Mummelsee, are easily reached from Geroldsau.

History

The settlement arose along the Grobbach. At the founding of the Kloster Lichtenthal (Lichtenthal Abbey), Geroldsau remained with the Margraviate, while Beuern — which later renamed itself Lichtental — was assigned to the abbey. This changed in 1288, when Rudolf II gave Geroldsau to his daughter Adelheid. She was the abbess of the abbey. In the deed of donation, Geroldsau is mentioned as Gerhartsowe.

For a long time, Geroldsau had no drinking-water supply. Since the water of the Grobbach was not of drinking-water quality, a total of seven Geroldsauer Laufbrunnen (Geroldsau running fountains) were built in 1863 to supply the population. Two of them still exist today.

Clubs and associations

The Turnverein Geroldsau 1919 e.V. offers a varied sports programme, including handball, tennis and gymnastics. Around 25 active brass musicians make music together in the Musikkapelle Geroldsau e.V. The club also organises early musical education at the Geroldsau kindergarten. The Gesangverein “Merkur” Geroldsau e.V. consists of an adults’ choir and a children’s choir. The club Höllenwölfe Geroldsau e.V. is a carnival (Fastnacht) club.

Playgrounds and green spaces

The Grobbachhalle is a sports and multi-purpose hall in Geroldsau. There are also tennis courts and a sports field in the immediate vicinity.

Anyone wishing to hike in Geroldsau can head for the Wanderportal Geroldsauer Wasserfall at the southern edge of the village. A stage of the Panoramaweg begins here, as do the Wasserfall Rundweg and the Kreuzfelsen Rundweg. The Malschbach Rundweg is very close by in nearby Malschbach. There are also plans to better connect the Geroldsauer Mühle, opened in 2015, to the cycling and hiking network of the town of Baden-Baden.

Transport and transport infrastructure

Geroldsau suffers from a high level of traffic noise. The noise from motorcyclists on their way to the Schwarzwaldhochstraße is particularly high. In 2015, a speed camera was installed at the southern edge of the village.

Geroldsau can be reached by public transport. It is served by bus routes 204 and 245.
