The Gartenamt Baden-Baden is the municipal department responsible for the care and design of the city’s public parks and gardens – from the Lichtentaler Allee and the Gönneranlage (park) to the playgrounds in the districts. The authority has borne the name Gartenamt again since 1 October 2024, after operating for about a decade as the Fachgebiet Park und Garten.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The Gartenamt plans, builds and maintains the parks and garden grounds, the recreational facilities and the municipal playgrounds. Added to this are the roadside greenery, the outdoor areas of sports facilities and schools, and the upkeep of the historic garden monuments. The department has looked after the city’s green spaces for over a hundred years – some 470 hectares of green space in all, including about 49 hectares of intensively maintained spa gardens and around 29,000 trees.[1]
Spa Gardens and Urban Greenery
The spa gardens that give the spa town its character are a focus of the work. Along the Lichtentaler Allee, in the Kurgarten and in the Dahlia Garden by the Klosterwiese, the gardeners renew the seasonal planting year after year. At the Rosenneuheitengarten Beutig the office also hosts the international competition for new rose varieties.
Beyond maintenance alone, the Gartenamt also shows its work to the public, inviting visitors during the season to botanical park and garden tours in which gardeners and planners lead the way through the grounds.
Contact and Access
The Gartenamt is based at Winterhalterstraße 6 and belongs organisationally to Dezernat 2. There is no open public counter – the department can be reached by appointment.
