Alexander Wieland (born 2 April 1971 in Baden-Baden) is an independent German local politician and civil engineer. Since 1 October 2024 he has been First Mayor of Baden-Baden. As head of the building department, he leads Department 2 covering the entire construction sector and is at the same time deputy to the Lord Mayor.
Education and Career
Wieland passed his Abitur (school-leaving examination) in 1990 at the Technisches Gymnasium Rastatt. After military service in Ulm and Calw, he studied civil engineering at the University of Karlsruhe from 1991 to 1996.
He began his career in 1996 as a construction and project manager in turnkey construction at the firm Wolff & Müller. From 2002 to 2007 he was technical project controller at the development company Cité mbH; shorter positions followed at the firm Dr. Schlick Baumanagement and as technical director of Gartenstadt Karlsruhe eG. In 2008 he took over the management of the municipal Gesellschaft für Stadterneuerung und Stadtentwicklung (GSE) and the Gesellschaft für Gewerbeentwicklung Baden-Baden (GEBB)[1], which he headed until 2024.[2]
First Mayor of Baden-Baden
In 2024, Wieland applied to succeed Alexander Uhlig as First Mayor. In his application, the then GSE managing director declared: “I want to use my experience, my networks and my knowledge to make our city even more liveable, keeping an eye on both tradition and innovation.“[3] As his priorities he named sustainable construction projects, the development of infrastructure and housing, and child- and family-friendly structures, including major projects such as the new fire station, Hindenburgplatz and the city archive.
The municipal council elected Wieland First Mayor and permanent general deputy to the Lord Mayor at its meeting on 30 September 2024 by 33 votes to 5. The term of office is set at eight years; it began on 1 October 2024 and runs until 2032.[4]
Responsibilities
As First Mayor, Wieland is responsible for Department 2 covering the entire construction sector as well as the city’s “green” facilities. His remit includes, among others, the Office for Fire and Civil Protection, the Office for Urban Development and Building Law, the Civil Engineering Office, the Building Construction Office, the Environmental Office, the Forestry Office, the Parks Office and the Cemeteries Office. Several municipal companies also fall within his area of responsibility, including the municipal utilities (Stadtwerke), Forstservice GmbH, Energieagentur Mittelbaden gGmbH and Krematorium Baden-Baden GmbH.[5]
Personal Life
Alexander Wieland was born in Baden-Baden in 1971. He is married and has three children.[2]
