Freundeskreis Lichtentaler Allee e.V.

The Freundeskreis Lichtentaler Allee e.V. is a non-profit association that supports the town of Baden-Baden in preserving the Lichtentaler Allee. The association also seeks to share knowledge with visitors to the landscape park. The chairman of the association is Prof. Dr. Bernd Gussmann.^[1]

Activities

The association promotes the preservation of the Lichtentaler Allee, a listed cultural monument, by providing financial support for individual measures. For example, the association supports the upkeep of the Oos bridges. Through talks, guided tours, information boards and a smartphone audio guide, the association provides information for interested visitors and thereby strengthens awareness of the Lichtentaler Allee as a cultural monument. Since 2006 the Freundeskreis has supported the town in its bid to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a great spa town of the 19th century. Since July 2021 Baden-Baden has been part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe and thus a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lichtentaler Allee landscape park is of great importance for this distinction.

History

The history of the association began with Orkan Lothar, the storm that felled many trees throughout the town in December 1999, and especially along the Lichtentaler Allee. Thanks to numerous donations from the people of Baden-Baden, the resulting gaps in the avenue could be filled with new plantings. After the successful fundraising campaign, the idea arose to found a friends’ association for Baden-Baden’s central landscape park. The Freundeskreis Lichtentaler Allee was thus founded in 2002.
