The DRK-Kreisverband Baden-Baden e.V. is the German Red Cross district association responsible for the city district of Baden-Baden, and part of the Badisches Rotes Kreuz state association. It runs the local ambulance service, maintains social services from meals on wheels to a clothing shop, and trains the public in first aid. Its office stands on Schweigrother Straße.
Services
Its remit ranges from civil protection through everyday social support to training, and rests on salaried staff and a large number of volunteers.[1]
Civil protection and rescue
The association works in the ambulance service and in patient transport, and provides first-aid cover at festivals and at sporting and cultural events. For incidents affecting large numbers of people it keeps a welfare service on standby. The volunteer Bereitschaften (readiness units) carry these duties.[1]
Social services and everyday support
For older people and others in need of help, the association runs a home emergency call system, the “Essen auf Rädern” meals-on-wheels service and a visiting service. A clothing shop and clothing banks collect used clothes and pass them on. Exercise classes such as senior and seated gymnastics round this out.[1]
Volunteering, blood donation and training
The association holds blood donation sessions and offers first-aid courses. Its school first-aid programme works with nine schools in Baden-Baden, where students train as first responders.[2] Anyone wanting to get involved can help out in the Bereitschaften, in the Jugendrotkreuz (Red Cross youth organisation) or in casualty simulation, or sign up for a Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (voluntary social year) or the Bundesfreiwilligendienst (federal volunteer service).[1]
History
The Red Cross goes back to the Swiss Henry Dunant, moved to act by the plight of the wounded after the Battle of Solferino in 1859. The International Committee formed in Geneva in 1863, and a year later the first Geneva Convention for the protection of those wounded in war was signed. Out of the regional German state associations of the 19th century, the German Red Cross emerged in 1921.[3] The Baden-Baden district association is the local arm of that organisation and today belongs to the Badisches Rotes Kreuz state association.
