The Deutscher Alpenverein e.V. Sektion Baden-Baden/Murgtal is the local section of the German Alpine Club for the area between Durmersheim and Bühl, which takes in the Murgtal, the Bühlertal and the Achertal as well as Baden-Baden. With more than 3,800 members it ranks among the mid-sized sections of the DAV. Its clubhouse, holding the section office and an attached climbing hall, stands right by the station in the Oos-West industrial estate.
What the section offers[1]
The section covers the full range of mountain sport: climbing, mountaineering, hill walking and biking, along with training, youth and family work, and nature and climate conservation. Its programme runs from an after-work session in the climbing hall to a multi-day tour in the Alps.
DAV climbing centre
The climbing centre on Flugstraße, opened in 2011, is the heart of the section. The hall went up within a year, covers more than 850 square metres and lets climbers work its walls up to a height of 13 metres.[2] It holds over 100 routes at varying grades and a 160-square-metre bouldering area, where climbers go without a rope at jumping-down height.
Climbing on the Battert
Outdoors, rock remains the section’s home ground. Climbers put up the first routes on the Battert above the town around the time the section was founded, and climbing there still matters today.
Tours, training and club life
Beyond climbing, the section organises mountain tours, hill walks and mountain-bike trips in the Alps and the German uplands. Its own courses train members in belaying and touring technique. Section evenings and talks run through the club year.
Youth, families and conservation
Separate activities address teenagers and families with children. The section also sees itself as a conservation organisation, and its state association has been registered as a recognised conservation body since the end of 2016.
Membership
Joining the section means joining the German Alpine Club. Membership brings reduced rates at some 600 Alpine Club huts in the Alps and an insurance package covering accidents in the mountains and on tour.[3]
History
The section was founded in 1889. The impetus came from climbers who had begun opening up the nearby Battert as a climbing area. Out of those beginnings on the rock grew a broad-based mountain-sport club over the decades, its territory now reaching from Durmersheim to Bühl and covering the Murgtal as well as Baden-Baden. The climbing centre by the station, opened in 2011, widened that range considerably: it gave the club its first large hall of its own within the town and made it more visible there.[2] The section belongs to the Bergsport- und Kletterverband Baden-Württemberg and to the Badischer Sportbund.
