L’Osteria is an Italian restaurant on Lange Straße, right next to the Festspielhaus (festival theatre). It is the Baden-Baden branch of a restaurant chain that began in Nuremberg in 1999 and today operates in nine European countries.[1] The chain is known for its oversized pizzas, which measure 45 centimetres across and hang over the edge of the plate.[2]
Opening and operation
The city’s first L’Osteria opened on 3 November 2023. Carsten Götze runs it as a joint-venture partner of the chain, and he already operates three restaurants in Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. In Baden-Baden he employs a team of 30. Around 1.5 million euros went into the location. The restaurant seats 150 indoors and roughly another 150 on the terrace.[3]
The restaurant occupies the old Markgräfler Hof. The tapas bar Besitos once filled the same rooms, and Bonito followed there with a very similar concept of tapas and cocktails.
The chain
Klaus Rader and Friedemann Findeis took over the first restaurant of that name in 1999, on Pirckheimerstraße in Nuremberg. It had already introduced the concept of oversized pizzas. Rosenheim (2001), Regensburg (2004) and Munich (2006) followed. Pizza and pasta are the core of the menu, and the pasta comes from a pasta manufactory in Nuremberg that has belonged to the company since 2013. The company owns some of the restaurants itself, while joint-venture or franchise partners run the rest. In 2023 the investment firm McWin acquired the majority of the shares.[1]
