The Stulz-von-Ortenberg-Schule is a private special-education and advisory centre (Sonderpädagogisches Bildungs- und Beratungszentrum, SBBZ) specialising in emotional and social development, in the Baden-Baden district of Lichtental. Its sponsor is the von Stulz-Schriever’sche Stiftung, one of the oldest institutions for children and young people in Baden. With just under 200 students in 30 learning groups, it ranks among the largest centres of its kind in Baden-Württemberg.[1]
Profile and courses
The school teaches four tracks: primary level, the learning-support track, Hauptschule with Werkrealschule (vocationally oriented secondary school), and Realschule (non-classical secondary school). Students therefore stay at the same school from year 1 to year 10 and can work towards different leaving qualifications as they develop.[1]
At the centre of it stands individual support for emotional experience and social behaviour. More than 50 teachers work across the 30 learning groups, and dependable relationships form the basis of the special-education work.[1]
The school also runs two student-led enterprises, one in forestry and one in catering, along with outdoor-education activities and orchestra and wind classes. Beyond lessons, an early-intervention unit and a special-education advisory service round out its work.[1]
History
The school is named after Johann Georg Stulz von Ortenberg (1771-1832), a tailor and benefactor from Kippenheim. He made his fortune in London as a gentlemen’s tailor, dressing the English aristocracy. In 1832 Grand Duke Leopold allowed him to bear the name of the extinct noble house of von Ortenberg. He bequeathed 200,000 francs for an orphanage next to Kloster Lichtenthal (Lichtenthal Abbey).[2]
That bequest gave rise in 1834 to the Stulzische Waisenanstalt, today the von Stulz-Schriever’sche Stiftung and the school’s sponsor. It counts among the oldest institutions for children and young people in Baden.[3]
